EAA Conference - Riva del Garda, Italy

From September 15th to September 20th 2009 the 15th annual meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists was held, this year in Riva del Garda, Italy. The venue, a conference centre on the shores of the lake, held the maximum number of parallel sessions. Excursions to local archaeological attractions, including Otzi the Iceman, the city of Venice and rock art in Valcamonica, were also arranged. The WODAN poster was displayed for the full duration of the conference within a formalised poster session which invited interested parties to approach the poster authors. Although several sessions included papers that touched on waterlogged wood the representation of anthracology was largely through the WODAN database and the presented poster. The conference also provided an opportunity to reaffirm international contacts within the WODAN project, particularly through the arranged social events such as the EAA annual party and conference dinner. The location, marred only slightly by rain on the first few days, led to a relaxed atmosphere and a highly enjoyable conference which covered topics as diverse as underwater archaeology to ritual animal death and archaeological conflicts with civil engineering and large development projects to the role of board games and music in the past.
