Susan Lyons

Susan graduated from University College Dublin in 1998 with a BA in Archaeology and History. From 1997 to 2001 she worked as a field archaeologist and held post-excavation positions on a variety of urban, rural and wetland archaeological projects around the country. She returned to study in 2001 and completed an MSc in Palaeoecology at Queens University Belfast specialising in wood identification. In 2002 she joined Headland Archaeology Ltd based in Edinburgh, Scotland and under the mentoring of Dr. Tim Holden required extensive experience in identifying plant macrofossil remains in the form of cereal remains and wild taxa as well as continuing to work with wood and charcoal material.

 In 2003, Susan returned to Ireland to take the position of archaeobotanist with Headland Archaeology Ireland, based in Cork and worked on an array of archaeobotancial projects both commercial and research. She held this position until 2007 and since then is working as a freelance archaeobotanist based in Cork.Susan is a member of the Irish Wood Anatomists Association (IWAA) and part of a collective making up the Irish archaeobotanical discussion group. She is also a member of the Irish Archaeologist Association (IAI) and the Association of Environmental Archaeology (AEA).
