Oliver Nelle

Oliver Nelle, University of Freiburg, GermanyOliver Nelle is practising charcoal research since his diploma thesis in 1998 at the University of Freiburg, Germany, starting with kiln site anthracology. For his PhD-work at the University of Regensburg, he combined pollen and charcoal analysis to investigate the vegetation history of the Western Bavarian Forest. Since 2005 he is Junior professor for Historical Geobotany at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel in Northern Germany. His research interests are Late-Glacial and Holocene vegetation dynamics, focusing on fine-scaled reconstruction of vegetation composition and its change; methodological development of charcoal analysis and its applications, especially the use of wood diameter analysis and growth ring analysis; integration of modern (“actuo”) ecological data with palaeoecological information on flora and vegetation. Methods he is specialised in comprise the analysis of wood and wood charcoal, micro charcoal, pollen, and peat macrofossils. Oliver Nelle teaches ecology and palaeoecology for students of Biology, Geography, Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology, and Environmental Management. He is a member of the new Graduate School “Human development in landscapes” at the University of Kiel.
