Cathy Moore

Cathy Moore graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1996 with a degree in Archaeology and Greek and Roman Civilisation. She began her career volunteering with the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (IAWU), a field unit based in UCD and dedicated to the survey and recording of archaeological sites in Irelands raised bogs. After this she continued to work on a variety of excavations and surveys throughout Ireland. In 2001 she became a full time member of the IAWU and remained so until its closure in 2005.

In 2003 Cathy directed excavations at Muckerstown, Co. Meath (N2 Finglas-Ashbourne Road Scheme), a multi-phase site including a series of large Middle Bronze Age pits containing waterlogged remains and over 100 wooden artefacts. In 2006 she directed the excavation at Edercloon, Co. Longford (N4 Dromod-Roosky By-Pass) of a large complex of multi-phase trackways, platforms, deposits of wood and wooden artefacts, on which post excavation work and research is ongoing. Cathy has recently worked as a specialist consultant on several excavations taking responsibility for the recording and curation of waterlogged wooden remains. Sites have included an early medieval horizontal mill at Kilbegly, Co. Roscommon and a vertical mill at Killoteran, Co. Waterford.

Cathy is currently undertaking a part time MA in Archaeological Practice at UCD, her primary research interests are ancient wood technologies and the archaeology of wetlands.
